Our Story
Hi, I'm Anna White. Wig lover.
...and the founder and sole employee of the one-man-show that is Wantable Wigs! In my 9-5, I'm a software developer living in Boston, MA. But here, I'm a full-time hair enthusiast.
Wigs are my passion. My creative journey started in 2015, selling my hand-styled wigs to make some extra ramen money during my time at Brown University. Now, it's become so much more.
Connecting all the amazing, strong, creative women around me with their #dreamhair means the world to me. I believe that everyone deserves to feel beautiful. To be their wild, weird, colorful self.
It's my dream that, through my wigs, I can help everyone express their beauty and creativity.
So, what makes a Wantable Wig?
So, what makes a #WantableWig so great? After 4 years in the online wig industry, I've figured out a unique process to treat synthetic wigs with so they are softer, last longer, and look more realistic for pennies on the dollar to a regular wig company (looking at you, Jon Renau Wigs! $600 for a synthetic wig??)
My (Long) Wig Process
Want to know exactly how a Wantable Wig is made? Let's do it!
I'm an expert on synthetic hair and how to make synthetics and human hair blends come alive. My shop is focused on taking ordinary supply units, units you could find anywhere, and transforming them into a glamourous, Wantable Wigs via hand-styling, coloring, cutting, and my exclusive synthetic-saving process.
Why spend $300 at a beauty salon for hair that will last you a few days, when you could get a wig whose color and style will never fade?
First, I order the "base unit"--a generic wig that is in need of a lot of love--and I give it the 5-star treatment. This is the material I use to make my art out of! My blank canvas, my fabric, my paint. It's the white tshirt I 'paint' my design onto.
The initial step of this is a 24-hour deep conditioning treatment. This increases the softness of the wig substantially, giving the synthetic fibers a human-like feel.
In the morning, I towel-dry the units the best I can and then leave them on a Styrofoam head to dry by the window. A shine-reducing serum is added to the wig for a more matte, realistic finish.
Also, after the unit is completely dried from its soaks/colorings, to remove shine further, I'll take five spritz's of Batise Dry Shampoo in the appropriate color for the unit (brown for darks, red for reds, blonde/white for blondes) and work the shampoo through the wig with my fingers.
By this point, almost all the shine is gone, and we're ready to start styling.
This is the fun part. Usually, the soak will cause curly units to lose their bounce, so I'll start by touching-up any lost curls. (For straight units, never hurts to run the flat-iron over them again to get that ultra-sleek look.)
Some base units, I'll find too curly, so I'll straighten them out into a looser wave. Once the low-level curl is completed, I tease. Heavens, do I tease! I'll cinch the hair up towards the root to give it that extra 'umpf'.
For my drag and drama-ready units, I'll use my boars-hair-brush to separate the curls into a voluminous sculpture of synthetic, brushing up and down the wig to separate all the hairs. After that, a quick spray of Revlon Finishing for Synthetic Hair and a run-through with my fingers to seal down any fly-aways leaves the unit almost ready for packing.
Finally, I pluck the parting spaces to create a more realistic hairline, using a photo of my own hair's part-line as a reference for how much hair to remove.
Once it meets my standards, we're almost ready to go. I now pack up the unit: I wrap it gently in a nylon netting and slide it into a pink polymailer along with a personal thank you card!
For more volume-heavy wigs, I'll add a cardboard backing to the polymailer to ensure it doesn't compress during packaging.
Transparency is Key
Unlike other wig stylists online who keep their production process a trade secret, Wantable Wigs, has nothing to hide, and wants its customers to fully trust our process and know exactly what they are ordering. That's also why Wantable Wigs offer a 100% no-questions asked return policy on units. I look forward to helping you get the hair of your dreams. Let's make the world a bit more glamorous!
